The slowdown in sugar beet planting in Europe may lead to a delay in the development of crops and, as a result, to a possible decrease in sugar production in the new season of 2023/2024 MY according to to the data of the agency MARS.

Thus, in the Netherlands and Belgium, 60% and 40% of the planned areas were sown by the end of April, respectively. The sowing campaign in these countries was delayed till May. Sowing rates in the region are lower than the average for the last few years.

Such serious delays are expected to affect the development of sugar beet this year. Extended sowing dates have led to the uneven development of seedlings in different regions, but overall the situation is considered satisfactory.

Benelux countries

Delayed sowing of sugar beet in Benelux countries this year was the worst since 2001, which resulted in the region being the last to finish sowing in Europe.

Sowing delays were also reported in France, Germany and Poland due to high soil moisture and below average temperatures. Sowing was completed two weeks later than average.

In these countries, the development stages of crops vary greatly. Soil moisture was generally favorable for early development, but cold weather did not help. Cases of aphid infestation were reported in several regions, which require careful monitoring and further control.

In northeastern Austria and the Czech Republic, high soil moisture in early April made field work difficult. From the second half of April, a more even distribution of precipitation became favorable for sowing.

In Hungary, the sowing campaign was almost fully completed after a short delay, while in Turkey it was completed with some delays due to excessively wet soil in April.

In 2022/2023 MY, the volume of sugar production in the EU is estimated at 13.9 million tons, which is 10% less than the previous season.
