On March 13, Bulgarian grain producers announced the start of an indefinite protest over duty-free Ukrainian grain imports to the European Union, reports BGNES.

Agricultural machinery briefly blocked the main road between Ruse and Pleven. They demanded that all Bulgarian members of the European Parliament defend the interests of farmers.

According to the protesters, Ukrainian grain does not meet EU standards for agricultural production and is not treated with appropriate chemicals and fertilizers.

Dimitar Dimitrov, the coordinator of the protest and head of an agricultural cooperative in the village of Alexandrovo, said that the protest is indefinite. This is to ensure that Bulgarian producers do not lose the subsidies they are entitled to from the EU.

Currently, the grain market in Bulgaria has collapsed, and producers’ warehouses are overcrowded with unsold grain.
