Ukrainian rapeseed prices keep falling but at a slower pace, with weak processor and export demand and strained port logistics shaping a fragile price floor.
Prices
Recent indicative bids in Ukraine show rapeseed at 21,000–22,000 UAH/t SRT-plant, reflecting continued but moderating price erosion. Export demand has weakened more strongly: offers on the western border stand around 540–560 USD/t DAP, while port demand prices have dropped to roughly 470–490 USD/t CPT-port and are often only indicative.
Converted to EUR (using approximate current FX), these levels place domestic plant bids and border/port indications clearly below French FOB levels and broadly in line with spot offers observed on the Ukrainian FCA and CPT markets. For reference, current commercial offers show about 460 EUR/t FCA Kyiv and Odesa for 42% oil rapeseed, and about 493 EUR/t CPT Odesa for grade‑1 rapeseed, down roughly 4% from mid‑July.
Supply & Demand
Domestic supply in Ukraine is seasonally ample, with freshly harvested volumes adding to already strong rapeseed inventories at processing plants. This comfortable stock situation has allowed processors to cut purchasing activity aggressively, triggering the recent downward adjustment in SRT-plant bids.
On the demand side, exporters remain cautious. Capacity at key Black Sea terminals is limited and fragile following repeated attacks and damage to port infrastructure, including a major export hub at Chornomorsk, which has recently seen operations curtailed. Combined with elevated insurance and freight costs, these constraints significantly reduce effective export demand and push more volume toward the domestic market instead of ports.
Western land routes, theoretically an alternative outlet, are not absorbing significant additional flows. High rail and truck tariffs, plus long distances from southern and remote producing regions, erode netbacks at the DAP western border despite nominally higher dollar prices there. This cost squeeze helps explain the subdued trade and the growing gap between internal logistics realities and otherwise supportive international price levels.
Fundamentals & Weather
The immediate fundamental picture is dominated by logistics and inventories rather than by crop size revisions. Ample stocks at plants and weak nearby crush margins in Ukraine keep buyers defensive. Internationally, Euronext rapeseed futures structure still reflects solid but not exceptionally tight European balances, with French FOB levels trading well above current Ukrainian port indications.
Weather in Ukraine in early August is seasonally warm, but short‑term forecasts do not suggest extreme heat or widespread yield-threatening events for rapeseed. Most of the crop is already harvested, so weather mainly affects logistics and subsequent fieldwork rather than current production. As a result, weather plays only a secondary role in price formation right now, while geopolitical and infrastructure risks at ports remain the key external driver.
Outlook & Trading Recommendations
Near term, the Ukrainian rapeseed market is likely to trade sideways with a soft tone. The sharpest phase of the price correction appears to be behind us, but a strong rebound is unlikely without clearer improvements in export logistics or a renewed rally in global vegetable oil prices. Domestic bids may oscillate narrowly around current levels as processors balance comfortable stocks with the need to secure quality supplies for the new crushing campaign.
Over the next few days, attention will remain on any further disruptions or partial restorations at Black Sea terminals and on the relative economics of routing flows via western borders. A stabilization of port operations, even at reduced capacity, would help put a firmer floor under CPT-port prices and gradually re-align them with DAP-border values and European benchmarks.
- Producers: Consider only limited spot sales at current SRT-plant levels if on-farm storage is constrained. Those with storage and manageable cash-flow may benefit from staggering sales, waiting for potential basis improvement once export logistics partially normalize.
- Processors: With ample inventories, maintain disciplined buying and look for opportunities to fix supply via deferred contracts if farmers turn reluctant sellers at these lower price levels.
- Exporters/Traders: Focus on flexible routing strategies and hedging of logistics risk. Use the discount of Ukrainian CPT-port versus EU FOB values to structure margin-positive spreads, but only where shipment execution risk is clearly understood and covered.
3‑Day Price Direction (Ukraine)
- Domestic SRT-plant bids: Mostly stable to slightly weaker around the current 21,000–22,000 UAH/t range.
- CPT-port Ukraine: Sideways; prices remain indicative with downside limited by already sharp prior declines but upside capped by capacity constraints.
- DAP western border: Stable in USD terms, with low liquidity; EUR-equivalent levels mainly driven by FX and freight changes.
