Ukrainian rapeseed prices keep falling amid large stocks, soft export demand and pressured meal values. Outlook cautious despite relatively stable oil prices.
Prices
Processing plants' bids last week were broadly split between working prices of UAH 20,000–21,800/t CPT and indicative levels of UAH 18,500–19,000/t CPT, confirming a clear downward adjustment in the domestic market. Large on-site inventories and cautious crusher demand are forcing farmers to accept lower levels or delay sales.
Current commercial offers also show a softening trend. Converting recent offers at roughly 1 EUR = 44 UAH, workable plant bids of UAH 20,000–21,800/t imply about EUR 455–495/t CPT. This aligns with Ukrainian FCA rapeseed indications around EUR 460/t in Kyiv and Odesa, versus roughly EUR 680/t FOB for French origin, underscoring Ukraine’s widening discount to EU benchmarks.
Supply & Demand
Supply remains the dominant driver. Plants report large raw seed inventories, and more enterprises are ramping up oilseed processing. This is increasing availability of both oil and, more notably, meal. With crush margins under pressure, processors are selective on new seed purchases, reinforcing the buyers’ market dynamic.
On the demand side, interest from domestic processors is described as moderate rather than strong, while export channels mirror the downward price movement seen locally. The combination of still ample farm and plant stocks and cautious buying attitudes means that any short-term tightness is unlikely, keeping sellers in a weak negotiating position.
Fundamentals: Oil vs Meal
Processed product dynamics are diverging. Rapeseed oil prices have declined more moderately and are largely contracted, offering some stability to crusher revenues. However, expanding domestic meal supply is weighing heavily on the complex, with meal prices having fallen by more than UAH 2,000/t over the past week and a half, a steep correction that directly erodes crush margins.
This imbalance means the marginal value of additional seed for crushers is shrinking. Unless meal offtake improves—via export channels or stronger domestic feed demand—processors have little incentive to raise bid levels for seed. By contrast, the relatively firmer oil market limits the downside but is not sufficient on its own to reverse the current bearish seed trend.
Weather & Logistics Outlook (UA Focus)
Short-term weather patterns across Ukraine in mid-August are seasonally warm to hot with scattered showers, but no widespread extreme events have been flagged in recent days that would materially alter near-term rapeseed supply. With the bulk of the crop already harvested, field weather is now a secondary driver compared with logistics and export flows.
More relevant for pricing is the evolving export and logistics environment, where discussions about higher logistics costs and possible restructuring of export routes could gradually raise outbound cost bases. In the immediate 3–5 day horizon, however, the key influence remains internal: large stocks and pressured meal prices dominate over weather-related concerns.
Trading Outlook (Next 1–2 Weeks)
- Farmers: Consider scaling in sales on any short-lived upticks, as large stocks and weak meal values argue against a quick recovery in seed prices.
- Processors: Maintain disciplined, inventory-based buying. Current conditions favour purchasing only at or below the lower end of the UAH 20,000–21,800/t CPT working range.
- Exporters: Use Ukraine’s discount to EU values to secure forward coverage, but factor in potential increases in logistics costs when pricing new business.
3-Day Price Direction (UA & EU Benchmarks)
- Ukraine CPT / FCA plants: Slight downside to stable in EUR terms as stocks remain heavy and meal prices are under pressure.
- Ukrainian export parity: Stable to marginally weaker, tracking domestic bids and cautious international demand.
- EU (French FOB reference): Mildly soft bias, but expected to remain well above Ukrainian levels, preserving a wide discount for Black Sea origin.
