Hungary Sends Mission to Inspect Ukraine Oil Pipeline After Supply Halt

CMB News | Energy & Geopolitics | March 2026

Hungary plans to send a special inspection mission to Ukraine to assess damage to the Druzhba oil pipeline after the flow of Russian crude through the route stopped at the end of January.

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbรกn issued a decree authorizing the mission, according to a notice published in Hungaryโ€™s official government gazette overnight.

The mission will be led by a deputy minister from Hungaryโ€™s energy ministry and will also include a representative from Hungarian oil company MOL.

Dispute Over Cause of Supply Halt

Until late January, Hungary and Slovakia were receiving Russian crude oil via the Druzhba pipeline, a critical supply route for both countries.

According to Ukraine, oil flows stopped after Russian attacks damaged infrastructure connected to the pipeline system.

However, the governments of Hungary and Slovakia claim the interruption was politically motivated, arguing that Kyiv deliberately halted deliveries rather than responding to technical damage.

Ukraine strongly denies these accusations.

Drone Strike Reportedly Hit Control Systems

Ukrainian officials say the damage occurred near Brody in the Lviv region in western Ukraine, where a Russian drone attack at the end of January hit an oil storage facility.

The resulting fire reportedly damaged underground control systems linked to the pipelineโ€™s operations.

Ukraineโ€™s energy minister stated:

โ€œThese damages are not visible from the outside but require extensive repair work.โ€

Mission Likely Symbolic Without Kyiv Approval

Experts note that the Hungarian inspection team cannot operate in Ukraine without the approval of the Ukrainian government, making the mission largely symbolic for now.

Orbรกn appears to be attempting to increase political pressure on Kyiv to restore oil flows as quickly as possible.

Growing Political Tensions

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said in an interview with the Italian newspaper Corriere della Sera that he is currently not in direct talks with Orbรกn.

โ€œOrbรกn does not want to speak with me,โ€ Zelenskyy said.

However, he confirmed that he remains in contact with Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico.

According to Zelenskyy, he told Fico:

โ€œThe pipeline is destroyed. To repair it, a ceasefire is needed. That must be clearly communicated to Putin.โ€

EU Tensions Over Ukraine Support

Since the supply halt, Orbรกn has reportedly blocked a planned multi-billion-euro EU loan package for Ukraine as well as additional sanctions against Russia.

Within the European Union, the Hungarian leader is widely regarded as the EU head of government with the closest relations to the Kremlin.

During the nearly four-year-long war between Russia and Ukraine, Hungary has maintained and even increased its dependence on Russian oil and gas.

Energy exports remain one of the key financial pillars supporting Russiaโ€™s war economy, making pipeline politics increasingly sensitive within the EU.
