China has become the main market for French barley in recent years. In January alone, the Chinese have bought at least several large vessels of French feed barley, boosting French exports.
French barley varieties are among the few European varieties approved for import by the Chinese authorities. This has opened up additional opportunities for France to export this grain, particularly in the context of the trade dispute between China and Australia.
According to the latest transactions, Chinese importers have bought 5-6 shipments (vessels) of barley of around 60 000 tonnes each. Other trade sources estimate that 10-15 vessels or up to 900 000 tonnes of barley have been purchased.
These deals were concluded in the last three weeks and covered the 2022 harvest. Grain is expected to be shipped in the first half of 2023, mainly in January-April. The barley should be of feed quality and not of malting quality.
However, traders do not expect China to continue to buy French barley actively due to the increase in prices. As a result, FranceAgriMer last week lowered its forecast for French barley exports outside the European Union.
