India’s 2021-22 Sowing Area of Kharif Crops Down 0.83% So Far

Area sown to summer Kharif Crops was lagging by 0,83 % at 11,0519 million Square Kilometer so far in the ongoing Kharif season of the Crop year 2021-22 (July -June), according to data released by the Agriculture Ministry on Friday.

Farmers had planted summer Kharif Crops in 11,145 million Square Kilometer in the Year-ago Period. Sowing of Kharif Crops Begins with the onset of Southwest from June.

As per the latest data, area sown to paddy (the main Kharif Crops) Remained marginally higher at 4,1418 million Square Kilometer till September 17 of this Kharif season as against 4,1334 million Square Kilometer in the Year-ago Period.

In the same period, the area sown to coarse cereals, oilseeds and cotton remained lower, while pulses, sugarcane and jute/Mesta rose marginally. Area planted to oilseeds remained lower at 1,9395 million Square Kilometer as against 1,9645 million Square Kilometer, while that coarse cereals Acreage was down 1,747  million Square Kilometer as against 1,7883 million Square Kilometer in the said period.

However, the area sown to pulses was higher at 1,4072 million square kilometres so far this Kharif season, from 1,3789  million square kilometres in the Year-ago Period.

In cash crops, the area sown to cotton was down at 1,1966 million Square Kilometer so far this Kharif season, against 1,2697 million Square Kilometer in the Year-ago Period.

But, acreage under sugarcane was slightly higher at 0,5497 million Square Kilometer as against 0,5408 million Square Kilometer.

The sowing of Kharif Crops in some places continues till September, and harvesting begins from October onwards.
