Concise rapeseed market analysis covering MATIF and ICE canola futures, EU supply-demand, Black Sea prices, weather outlook and short-term trading ideas.

European rapeseed prices are under mild downward pressure as ample EU stocks, softer energy markets and competitive soybeans curb nearby demand, while the MATIF forward curve still rewards storage into mid‑2027. ICE canola in Canada has corrected lower in sympathy, but remains fundamentally supported by strong crush and export pace. Rapeseed markets entered November with a clear contango on Euronext and easing physical indications from both Western Europe and the Black Sea. EU production for 2026/27 is broadly adequate to slightly above the five‑year average, yet crusher demand has lagged as soybeans remain the cheaper oilseed and biodiesel producers react to the recent pullback in crude oil. At the same time, farm and collector stocks in France and neighbouring countries remain high, forcing the market to pay for storage and depressing nearby basis, while Ukrainian offers drift lower amid logistical and geopolitical uncertainty.

Prices & Futures Structure

The MATIF rapeseed board closed on 5 November 2026 with a stable but clearly contangoed curve. February 2027 settled at EUR 526.00/t, with May 2027 at EUR 528.75/t and August 2027 back to EUR 509.00/t, while the November 2027 position traded at EUR 513.75/t. Further out, February and May 2028 each hovered around EUR 514–515/t, before easing towards EUR 460.00/t for August 2028.

This structure confirms that the market is paying to carry seed into mid‑2027, consistent with reports that May is trading at a notable premium to February rather than at the usual discount, reflecting burdensome nearby availability. ICE canola futures moved lower on 5 November: January 2027 settled at CAD 753.20/t, down around 2% on the day, with the curve gently upward into mid‑2027 before softening into 2028, suggesting a modest correction rather than a structural bear trend.

Physical Market Signals

Current cash indications corroborate the futures signal of gentle softening. French rapeseed FOB Paris is quoted at EUR 0.55/kg on 5 November, down from EUR 0.59/kg at the end of October, implying steady erosion of spot values as stocks weigh and crushers show limited urgency. In the Black Sea, Ukrainian grade‑1 rapeseed CPT Odesa stands at EUR 0.409/kg, down from recent highs around EUR 0.432/kg in late October, while FCA Ukraine 42% oilseed values have eased to EUR 0.44/kg in Odesa and EUR 0.43/kg in Kyiv.

The narrowing but still positive spread between Western European FOB and Ukrainian CPT quotations keeps Black Sea origins competitive into the EU, though volumes are moderated by logistics costs and geopolitical risk. Recent commentary from a French desk notes that Rouen cash is trading only slightly under the February MATIF contract and close to its historical median discount, underscoring that, despite comfortable stocks, domestic collectors are not under extreme pressure to liquidate.

Supply, Demand & External Drivers

On fundamentals, EU rapeseed output in 2026/27 is assessed slightly below last season but still above the five‑year average, thanks mainly to a larger harvested area across France, Germany, Poland and Romania. The European Commission pegs rapeseed production roughly 3.2% above the 5‑year mean but about 3.8% below 2025/26, which, combined with comfortable carry‑in stocks, still leaves the EU well supplied overall.

Crush demand has softened in early 2026/27. EU processors reportedly crushed around 4.52 Mt of rapeseed from July to September, slightly below recent years, as cheaper soybeans displaced some rapeseed in oil and meal formulations. In parallel, a pronounced drop in global crude oil prices in early November has tempered biodiesel margins and weighed on feedstock demand, prompting a 5%‑plus weekly fall in European rapeseed prices within the recent EUR 516–563/t Paris range.

Nevertheless, downstream margins for rapeseed oil and EU biodiesel remain historically attractive, leaving scope for crushers to increase usage once current stock overhangs are drawn down. French crush margins are reported substantially higher year‑on‑year, and EU biodiesel margins on 30 October sat well above last season, suggesting that the current lull in seed buying is more about timing and relative pricing versus soybeans than about structural demand destruction.

Weather & Crop Conditions

For the newly sown 2027 harvest, weather conditions across key EU rapeseed regions are broadly favourable. Recent monitoring points to above‑average precipitation over north‑western France, south‑eastern Poland and eastern Ukraine in early November, combined with slightly below‑average temperatures in central Europe, a pattern that generally supports establishment and early vegetative growth of winter rapeseed.

Seasonal outlooks for November indicate near‑ to slightly above‑normal temperatures for much of Western Europe, with alternating high‑pressure and Atlantic trough phases bringing a mix of settled and unsettled spells rather than prolonged extremes. After the severe heat and drought episodes earlier in 2026, the current pattern offers a more benign backdrop for rapeseed development, although windstorm activity later in the winter could still pose lodging risks in exposed regions.

Trading Outlook & 3‑Day View

  • Producers (EU): With February–May 2027 MATIF still offering a carry and local FOB prices in France and neighbouring markets easing, incremental old‑crop sales on rallies into the upper part of the recent EUR 516–563/t futures range look prudent, while retaining some length in case of renewed strength in energy or soybean complexes.
  • Crushers: Comfortable stocks and a contangoed curve argue for a patient, scale‑down buying approach, especially while soybeans remain at a significant discount. However, strong oil and biodiesel margins justify locking in attractive crush spreads when nearby futures dip and basis weakens.
  • Importers / End‑users: The current soft tone in Ukrainian CPT and FCA offers provides an opportunity to extend coverage modestly, balancing price advantages against Black Sea logistics and geopolitical risks.

Over the next three trading days, the rapeseed complex is likely to remain slightly heavy but range‑bound. MATIF nearby contracts should continue to trade within the established EUR 516–563/t corridor, with a modest downward bias if crude oil and soy complexes stay under pressure. ICE canola is expected to consolidate after its recent 1–2% daily declines, tracking both energy markets and North American oilseed sentiment.
