The year 2024 may break the record of 2023 and become the hottest year on Earth in the history of observations. This is reported by Bloomberg with reference to the surveyed experts.
According to experts, the rise in temperature this year will be influenced by the natural phenomenon of El Niño, associated with fluctuations in the temperature of the surface layer of water in the equatorial part of the Pacific Ocean. Michael McFadden, a senior scientist at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, said that there is a delay between the heating of water in it and the increase in the temperature of the Earth’s surface, in this regard, emphasized Bloomberg, the second year under the influence of El Niño is often warmer than the first.
Exacerbated by human activity
The situation with the increase in temperature on the planet will be exacerbated by human activity – in particular, the burning of fossil fuels, which leads to an increase in greenhouse gases in the atmosphere, which directly affects the heating of the Earth. Scientists noted that if in 2023 the average temperature on the planet was about 1.4 degrees Celsius higher compared to the same indicator in the pre-industrial era, according to preliminary estimates, this year it will increase by 1.3-1.6 degrees.
In December 2023, it became known that November of the same year became the warmest November in the history of observations. Similar records were recorded in June, July, August, September and October, with July of last year being the hottest month for all mankind.
