The authorities of the Brazilian state of Parana seized about 9 thousand bottles of fake olive oil, their value is estimated at 56 thousand euros. During the inspection, it was revealed that the product also contained soybean oil, although the product was positioned as virgin olive oil of Spanish origin.
At first, local authorities were alarmed that bottles with Spanish brands were found in boxes with Portuguese labels. Then, as it turned out, different types of caps were also screwed on the packaging.
“In the long term, the challenge for Brazil is to prevent fraud, as is happening today with imported olive oil” said Estância das Oliveiras market relations director Rafael Gelzer.
Brazilian government agencies declined to name the supermarket chains that received the fake olive oil.
In recent oil inspections in Türkiye, officials have reported catching fake products. Many of the olive oils sold over the Internet are counterfeit. In addition, 1000 liters of fake olive oil was detected in an inspection in Denizli. This year during inspections, 141 million Liras (4,45 million Euros) in administrative fines were imposed on businesses found to be non-compliant.
Due to the decline in olive oil production, prices have risen in Türkiye and Mediterranean countries, so the cheap sale of olive oil on the internet should bring to mind the fake product.
