New Partnership to Boost Local Oilseed Production
The Kazakhstan National Association of Oilseed Processors (NAPMK) and the Republic Seed Production Chamber have signed a cooperation agreement aimed at promoting domestically selected oilseed varieties. The strategic partnership aims to enhance Kazakhstan’s self-sufficiency in key oilseeds, including sunflower seeds, soybeans, and rapeseed.
Goals for Self-Sufficiency
Yadykar Ibragimov, Chairman of NAPMK’s Board of Directors, emphasized the primary goal of achieving self-sufficiency in domestic oilseed production. “The objective is to reach the country’s self-sufficiency targets, particularly in sunflower seeds, soybeans, and rapeseed,” Ibragimov stated.
Comparative Insights from Russia
Ibragimov highlighted Russia’s current self-sufficiency level in sunflower seeds, which stands at 25-30%. The Russian government aims to increase this to 75% by 2030. Furthermore, the National Sunflower Association (NSA) previously reported that the share of hybrid and sunflower varieties in Russia’s domestic selection would reach 50% by 2024, translating to 12,000 tons of hybrids and at least 8,000 tons of varieties.
Growth in Sunflower Cultivation
This year, Kazakhstan has seen a significant increase in sunflower cultivation. The area dedicated to sunflower crops expanded by 308.2 thousand hectares, reaching a total of 1,157.4 thousand hectares. According to the Ministry of Agriculture, the area for oilseed crops is expected to continue growing.
The new agreement between Kazakhstan’s oilseed processors and seed producers marks a significant step towards enhancing the country’s agricultural self-sufficiency. By focusing on the promotion and production of domestic oilseed varieties, Kazakhstan aims to reduce its reliance on imported seeds and boost its agricultural sector. This initiative not only supports local farmers but also strengthens national food security. Moving forward, it will be crucial to monitor the progress and impact of this partnership on Kazakhstan’s oilseed industry.
