The sunflower harvest in Bulgaria this year is estimated at 1.62 million tons, which is 21% lower than last year’s figure. The decrease in production is due to both the reduction of sown areas under the oilseed (by 6% per year, down to 860.04 thousand hectares), and the decrease in its average yield (by 16% – down to 0.189 tons/ha).
According to the estimates of the Ministry of Agriculture of Bulgaria, in this year the country harvested about 6.59 million tons of wheat with an average yield of 0.54 tons per hectare, which is 6% higher than the result of the previous year.
According to the statement of the head of the department, Kirill Vatev, this volume of grain is sufficient to meet the country’s needs for the production of flour, bread and confectionery, amounting to an average of 1.1 million tons per year, as well as the required volume for the feed industry and the realization of export potential.
In addition, according to the estimates of the Ministry of Agriculture, this year’s corn harvest amounted to 2.25 million tons (-9.9% per year) with sown areas of 534.83 thousand hectares. The average yield of the grain crop decreased by 11.6% per year.
It is also reported that as of December 8 this year wheat stocks in Bulgaria were estimated at 3.4 million tons, corn – 1.8 million tons, sunflower seeds – 1.5 million tons.
