Does Südzucker withdraw from sugar production?

Südzucker had reduced the production of granulated sugar from 5.2 million tonnes to 3.7 million tonnes last year.

Südzucker does not plan to import or export sugar in the 2021/2022 campaign. It will continue to withdraw from sugar production for the food sector because the large processors, such as the confectionery industry, are trying to reduce the sugar content in the products massively. In May 2021, Südzucker’s sugar division again published an operating loss of more than 120 million euros.

Südzucker is working with BASF on other product areas for sugar. Packaging materials with sugar crystals are to be developed, which automatically decompose/dissolve after about 6 months… such as sacks, bags for dough pieces, pizzas, etc. more margin is made with this than in the food sector, and this can also be used to predict Südzucker’s further development as a sugar producer.
