According to the National Bureau of Meteorology of Australia, due to the El Niño weather phenomenon, Australia recorded the driest October since 2002, which negatively affected crop yields, Reuters reports.
It is specified that the amount of precipitation in October of this year was 65% lower than the average level for the specified period. In every part of Australia, except for Victoria, the amount of precipitation was below average, and for the state of Western Australia, October was the driest in the history of observations.
Rains in some parts of the country in early October halted the rapid decline in projected yields, but the country’s wheat harvest is still expected to decline by about 35% for the year to 26 million tons.
Rainfall in Australia is also forecast to be below average through January.
