Reduced Sowing Leads to Concerns in Coriander Production in Gujarat

The latest data reveals a significant decrease in coriander sowing areas in Gujarat. This major spice crop has seen a notable decline. The current Rabi season’s cultivation area is just 127,000 hectares. This is a 43% drop from the previous season’s 222,000 hectares.

Farmers in Gujarat have shifted their focus. They are now prioritizing cumin over coriander. This shift comes as cumin prices hit record highs in 2023. In contrast, coriander prices have been stable or declining. This trend has led to lower revenues from coriander.

In the Saurashtra division, coriander sowing areas have significantly reduced. They have gone from 219,000 hectares last season to 123,000 hectares. However, North Gujarat shows a different trend. There, the area has increased from 300 to 500 hectares, a 67% rise. The Kutch division also saw a slight increase in sowing area, from 2,500 to 2,600 hectares. Central Gujarat maintains a steady area of 500 hectares.

Weather conditions so far are favorable for coriander crops. However, the months of February and March are critical. Adverse weather, such as heavy rain or storms, could harm the production.

In Rajasthan, there’s a noticeable decline in interest in sugarcane farming. Madhya Pradesh, however, reports normal sowing activities. Market analysts predict a potential increase in coriander prices. This is due to expected production drops and rising export demands. The second half of the year is crucial as it aligns with the lean supply season. Despite this, current stock levels are considered adequate.
