The United Nations has warned the world about drought. According to experts, the El Niño climate phenomenon, which causes an increase in global temperatures, has already begun. Countries need to prepare for its consequences. The weather phenomenon will continue throughout 2023 and will take over in 2024, APK News reports.
The climate model is considered to be natural in origin, it causes temperature increase and drought in one part of the world and showers in others. El Niño occurs on average once every 5-7 years and lasts about a year.
The United Nations Meteorological Organization has announced that El Niño has already begun and will continue into 2023.
“The onset of El Niño will significantly increase the likelihood of temperature records being exceeded and will trigger more extreme heat in many parts of the world and in the ocean,” warned WMO Secretary-General Petteri Taalas.
The effect of El Niño warming on global temperatures is usually felt most strongly within a year of its onset – in this case, in 2024.
Previously, the warmest year on record was 2016, when the most powerful El Niño was recorded. In May this year, the UN announced that the temperature record would be broken within the next 5 years.
El Niño causes extreme weather conditions. These include tropical cyclones, heavy rainfall and severe droughts.
Reference. El Niño and La Niña are extreme water temperature and atmospheric pressure events characteristic of the equatorial Pacific Ocean that last about six months. El Niño means Little Boy, La Niña means Little Girl in Spanish.
