In the current season, there is a deficit of about 6% in the sowing of mustard. However, due to the government’s increase in the minimum support price, it was believed that farmers would be encouraged to grow this significant Rabi oilseed in a maximum area, but its impact is reversal.
Current Scenario
In its latest figures, the State Agriculture Department has said that mustard has been sown in a total of 2,80,900 hectares in the current season in Gujarat.
In the period under review last year, mustard was sown on 2,99,000 hectares. This shows a deficit of 18,100 hectares or 6.05 percent in mustard sowing in the state in the current year. Its sowing has decreased comparatively in the second and third major producing regions of Gujarat, Kutch and Saurashtra.
Mustard future depends upon its harvest
The future of this commodity depends upon its harvest. As the production is low, it may be challenging to manage the demand, and thus, the mustard prices may increase. If the weather remains favourable, then there may be relief in prices, but looking at the current data, experts predict that mustard will see a bullish trend during the onset of the season.
