India: In Gujarat, Karnataka, and Tamil Nadu, Tur pulse prices are above the MSP price of $0,83 ranging between $0,84-$0,85 per kg.

Tur and Gram, the two vital pulses, exhibits varying trend across the major producing states.
The minimum support price on Tur pulse is $0,83 per kg. Still, the prices of Tur in the mandis of key producing states – Gujarat, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, and Karnataka marks above the minimum selling price, between $0,84-$0,85.

While the Gram prices in the mandis of the major Gram producing states Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Telangana, and Andhra Pradesh, prices 4,19 below the MSP at 0,698 per kg.

Together, Gram and Tur contributed 63% in the total pulse production in India last year 2021-2022, which affected the minimum selling price (MSP) and purchase operations of the NAFED (National Agricultural Cooperative Marketing Federation) – resulted in the purchase of mere 20000 tons of Tur pulse by the NAFED since its commencement in January.

The purchase of Gram pulse was approximately 1,6 tonne procured from Andhra Pradesh, Telangana,Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh and Tamil Nadu by NAFED since it initiated the procurement at the start of this month.
The speculations are strong on the pacing up of Gram pulse purchase in the initial weeks of April, as in this month, yields are high with more stock incoming.

The farmer federation, which had normal stocking quantity of 21 LT, now stocks – tur pulse, gram pulse, moong pulse, urad pulse at 0,133 MT, 1,104 MT, 0,344 MT, and 0,53 MT.

The Government secures the purchase of Tur at 4 million tonne, which is less by 32 percent compared to the previous year. The traders relate the deficit to the unfavorable climate condition that reduced tur pulse output by 20%.

Gram crop yield in 2021-2022 is estimated to increase by 1,20 MT from 11,92 MT registered in 2020-2021.
The Vice-Chairman of (AIPGA) All India Pulses and Grains Association, Bimal Kothari, substantiates the stock arrivals of Gram in Maharashtra and Gujarat to reduce its price below the MSP.

The Government imported Tur, moong, and urad pulses in 2021-2022, Tur pulse around 0,7 million tons, due to domestic insufficiency in Tur crop yield in the month of May 2021.

The Managing Director of MahaFPC, who also engages in procuring pulses – Tur and Gram for NAFED, has asked for a revolving budget from the Government to pay dues of the farmers on their produce, within a time span and not later than three days.
