Paraguay Exports More Chia and Shows Great Strength in the International Market

Paraguay continues to be the largest producer and exporter of chia in the world, despite the fact that this year lower yields per hectare have been reported due to adverse weather conditions, according to Gilberto Osorio, president of the Paraguayan Chamber of Sesame Exporters (Capexse).

Osorio explained that the marketing period for chia in the country depends on the April harvest and early crops that were carried out at the beginning of July. Despite an increase in the area dedicated to cultivation, yields decreased compared to previous years, a variation that is attributed to climatic factors.

“It is yielding much less than in previous years and we will see how many tons it reached,” he added. He explained that, although the yields are lower than in previous years, Paraguay continues to lead the global market.

According to the data, the country exports to approximately 64 countries, with the United States as the main buyer, followed by countries in the European Union and regional markets in Chile and Bolivia.

Paraguay’s presence in the global chia market is notable, with around 50% of the share of world consumption.

World consumption is already around 110,000 tons per year, and Paraguay last year, I think we had around 49,000 tons, so Paraguay practically covers half of what the world consumes,” he said.
