The sowing of major Kharif oilseeds – peanuts has declined significantly in Gujarat this season. The reason is high temperatures and deficient rainfall in major growing areas.
The Meteorological department has said the increase in the temperature was due to the absence of pre-monsoon rainfall in the state. The State Agriculture Department releases this information.
The Gujarat Agriculture Department, in its latest data, revealed peanuts had been sown in a total of 366,500 hectares in the state during the period so far. However, a year ago, the sowing area was 9,99,400 hectares. This shows the massive decline in groundnut sowing by 632,900 hectares or 63.32 percent in Gujarat.
The sowing of major Kharif oilseeds has declined in all major producing regions, but the situation remains very poor in central Gujarat.
Saurashtra is the largest peanut-producing region of Gujarat. in the current season, a total of 351,200 hectares of groundnut have been sown in Saurashtra compared to last year’s 916,800 hectares.
The sowing situation is the same in Central Gujrat, North Gujrat, and Kutch areas.
The Meteorological Department has announced the arrival of the monsoon in the Mahisagar district of central Gujarat. Monsoon arrived in the areas of the state two days earlier than expected. However, despite the early onset of monsoon, the rains have remained very weak in most areas of the state. Furthermore, the monsoon has not progressed even further. However, the department believes that in the coming two-four days, the conditions will improve given the progress of the monsoon.
