Spices Import Increased in Fy 2021-22

Generally, the slowdown in grocery commodities depends on the volume of exports and imports. Exports primarily rely on the movement of the domestic market, but imports of various spice commodities have increased in FY 2021/22. According to the data released by Spices Board, during the financial year 2021/22, 2,24,314 tonnes of spices were imported.

Black pepper

During the financial year 2021/22, 37,188 tonnes of pepper were imported into the country. Significantly, some quantity of imported pepper was also meant for re-export. Earlier, during the financial year 2020/21, 29,415 tonnes of pepper were imported.

Turmeric

According to the latest figures of the Spices Board, during the financial year 2021/22, 22,916 tonnes of turmeric were imported. While 15,385 tonnes of turmeric worth were imported during 2020/21.

Cloves

According to the data released by the Spices Board, during the financial year 2021/22, 22,511 tonnes of cloves were imported into the country. Earlier in 2020/21, 27,176 tonnes of cloves worth were imported.

Coriander

15,603 tonnes of coriander was imported during the financial year 2021/22, whereas during the previous financial year 2020/21, only 877 tonnes were imported.

Black cardamom

According to the data released by the board, during the financial year 2020/21, 7045 tonnes of cardamom were imported into the country. Only 7799 tonnes of cardamom were imported during this financial year.

Ginger 

During the financial year 2020/21, 15,385 tonnes of dry ginger was imported into the country, reaching 13,101 tonnes during the financial year 2021/22.
