According to the data of the customs service of Ukraine, in September of the current year, the export of sunflower amounted to slightly more than 12 thousand tons. This was twice the figure of August, but still significantly less to the volume of September last year (-93%).sunflowers
The main volume of shipments was made in the direction of Moldova (about 41%) and Türkiye (31%), and only 4% – to Bulgaria.
As we know, last year in September, Bulgaria was one of the main importers of Ukrainian sunflower. About 74 thousand tons went for export in this direction. This year, due to restrictions on the import of 4 agricultural crops (including sunflower), this direction remained closed. After lifting the ban on the import of Ukrainian agricultural products on September 15, Bulgaria announced that it would not immediately resume the import of Ukrainian sunflowers. They do not want to collapse the domestic market, despite the rather high demand for it from Bulgarian processors.
At the same time, the recovery in the Ukrainian export market supported domestic prices. Domestic processing enterprises still remain the main buyers of sunflower in Ukraine. But export companies create additional competition in the market.
In case of an active recovery of exports to the European Union countries, Ukrainian farmers will be in a more advantageous position. But the questions – when this will happen and how licensing will work – remain open for now.
