The small ports on the river Danube were the only outlet to the sea.

For 300 days Ukraine has been resisting Russian aggression on all fronts. The small ports on the river Danube were the only outlet to the sea from the beginning of the invasion until the conclusion of the “grain agreement” in July. Through the ports of Reni and Izmail, grain was transported along the Danube to consumers or to the ports of Romania. Since the beginning of the year, the volume of grain transshipment by the Danube ports has increased by 42 times compared to the same period last year.

The ports of the Danube transshipped 24% of the total volume of shipments by the seaports of Ukraine.

According to the Ukrainian Sea Ports Administration, during 11 months of this year, the ports of Reni, Izmail, Ust-Dunaysk handled 14.5 million tons of cargo, which is 294% higher than last year.

The first position in terms of transshipment volumes in the range of goods is occupied by grains and oilseeds, which were handled by 6.1 million tons, or 42 times more than in 11 months of 2021.

Despite the fact that these ports have used all available capacities for transshipment, they still have the potential for further development, since the modernization of port infrastructure, dredging, and the construction of new terminals will increase the volume of shipments.

The Danube ports continue to work actively, taking into account the delay in the calls of ships to the ports of the Black Sea by the grain corridors.
