Revised growth has increased by 2.1% for food grains
Crops harvested in the summer season i.e. ‘Zaid’ crop projections output is estimated at 330.53 Million Tonnes. The Ministry of Agriculture, in its third advance estimate of agricultural crops for the current crop year – July 2022 to June 2023, pegged food grains output at a record high of 330.53 Million Tonnes. The previous year it was 315.61 MT and in the second advance estimate, it was 323.55 MT.
The weather conditions in the months of February and March affected Rabi crops and by the end of the month, the fear was also gone. Thursday, previous projections made in February are now revised & increased by 2.1% by the Indian government for food grain production.
“Zaid” crop, sown between the Rabi and Kharif crops are distinctly treated, unlike earlier years when they were treated as part of Rabi crops by the Central Government.
Wheat output has increased estimation of 105 MT proved wrong
What could be better than continues growth? The Ministry projected wheat output at a new high of 112.74 MT while it was 112.18 MT in the second advance estimate and 107.74 MT last year.
Agencies such as the Roller Flour Mills Federation of India also estimated production lower than 105 MT which proved wrong. Traders, too, say wheat production is lower, pointing to the procurement of the Central Pool stocks by the Food Corporation of India this year. The wheat procurement target was 34.51 MT but 26.17 MT could be achieved as per the official sources.
Rice production has increased – Export ban was revoked by Centre
With the Centre raising the Kharif rice production by 2 Million Tonnes (110 MT as achieved & 108 MT was the second estimate). Overall output for the year has been pegged at a new peak of 135.54 MT with Rabi projected at 15.89 and the “Zaid” crop at 9.61 MT.
Export of fully broken rice was banned since 8 September, 2022. Now, Government has permitted exports of fully broken rice under certain conditions such as meeting food emergencies of neighboring and African countries.
Other crops production has also increased
Overall, cereals production has been pegged higher at 303.03 MT (295.74 MT/288.31 MT). The maize crop production has risen to 35.91 MT (34.61 MT/33.73 MT). Coarse cereals production has been raised to 54.74 MT (52.72 MT/51.10 MT) with other gains forming from Bajra (Pearl Millet) and Shree Ann (Nutri-cereals). The output of the rest such as Jowar (Sorghum), Small Millets and Barley is seen lower.
