Current Scenario

This year, kharif season saw enormous onion crop damage. Farmers have significant losses. Therefore, this summer, they are not interested in the onion crop. On the contrary, the state government has informed that there are good crops for Onion compared to last year’s summer crop.

A farmer who has been sowing onions for the last ten years informed the reporters that Onion has not been in demand lately. Paddhari, Visavadar, Halvad, and Gondal city traders have told in one of their interviews to the local news that there has not been a demand for onion sowing seeds. Therefore there is less sowing area this year compared to last year.

At present, Jamnagar, Rajkot, and Gondal yards have fewer crop arrivals; in local mandis, arrivals were noticed just once in a few days. Some traders have informed that even when there are new arrivals, they last for 4 to 5 days. Against these arrivals, selling was observed for 35000 to 40000 bags.

According to some local brokers, North Indian states’ demand has helped the Onion market. Due to the winter season, Onion consumption is more in North India, which has given onion markets a positive price trend.

Price

By the 2nd week of January, onion prices went up due to unseasonal rain and crop damage. Today in some of the markets in Gujarat, the price went up and quoted around $8,12 per kg for Exports.

Future

According to the traders, prices can move further up for Onion in the coming days. Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, and Maharashtra state onion crops have considerable damage. Therefore there are no chances that the market will go down.
