According to Iran customs statistics, 94,867 kilograms of Iranian barberry were exported from this country in February of this year. Kazakhstan has been the most important destination of this Iranian export product importing 38,617 kg (40.7 percent of the total barberry exported by Iran) during this period. The second most important export destination of this product is Turkey with an import of 29,260 kg (30.8 percent of Iran’s total exported barberry). Germany was also the third destination of this Iranian export product in February with 6,155 kg (6.5 percent of the total barberry exported by Iran).

The export of Iranian barberry increased in February 2023 compared to January. 74,628 kilograms of barberry were exported from Iran in January this year. The export of this product has risen by 27 percent in February compared to January. Some factors encouraged more Iranian barberry farmers, traders, and activists to export this product, including the stability of barberry prices in the Iranian domestic market in February compared to the previous month and a significant increase in the exchange rate of foreign currencies against the Rial. This issue led to a rise in the exports of this product in February compared to January.

Increase in export rate and production

Also, the export of this product has grown significantly compared to the same period last year (February 2022). In February last year, 38,426 kg of Iranian barberry were exported from Iran. The export rate of this product has gone up by about 147 percent in February 2023 compared to February 2022. The increase in the production of barberry this year compared to last year has increased the supply of this product to the world markets and the export of this product. Last year, the amount of production decreased, and it was not of good quality due to drought.

Puffed barberry

Unlike last year, this year’s barberry product is of very high quality, especially Puffed barberry. This issue has led to a significant increase in the export demand for this product and its export. Another influential factor in the export increase of this product in February this year is the rise in the price of foreign currencies in the Iranian market compared to February last year.

The price of Iranian barberry for export has decreased in the world markets by 4 to 5.5 percent compared to the last seven weeks. The increase in the exchange rate of foreign currencies against the Rial is the most significant factor in reducing the price of this Iranian export product in the world markets. The cost of foreign currencies increased significantly during the first five weeks of this period. But during the last two weeks, it has dropped due to the agreement between Iran and Saudi Arabia to resume political, business, and economic relations. This issue partly compensated for the increase in the price of foreign currencies in the first weeks of this period.
