The new crop of black Pepper is arriving in Kerala. However, the amount reaching significant shops such as Kochi is nominal. This has increased pressure on the spot price of Pepper, further due to the introduction of new crops and imports. Pepper will likely remain in a consolidated mode in the near future.

Buyers directly buys from farmers

The new crop of black Pepper is beginning to arrive in Kerala, but its presence in significant stores like Kochi still remains low. Deals for exports at these shops are also reported to be minimal since buyers are purchasing directly from farmers. Apart from that, due to adverse weather conditions causing supply from central-producing states like Karnataka and Kerala to be much lower than usual. However, with more precise and warmer weather conditions now being observed, traders are optimistic that arrivals will gradually build up over time. Alongside this, imports from Vietnam are also underway.

Govt tightened regulations on imported pepper

Since the government had previously tightened regulations on imported pepper, this has caused some ripple effects on the domestic market resulting in a slight increase in pepper prices. Despite good rainfall than average being experienced in Kerala this monsoon season, sales for farmers remain low as the deals for certain commodities, such as Pepper, are made directly from rural areas to consuming markets. This has made activities at different stores within the state sluggish, and it is expected that black pepper prices will continue to remain within a narrow range moving forward.

The pepper black 550 g/l prices were recorded at $6,52 per kg FOB.
