Enjoying one of the classic dishes in Italy is now 30 percent more expensive. According to the Bloomberg Margarita Index, the average cost of cooking pizza margaritas rose almost 30 percent in December from a year ago.

This is considerably higher than last month’s 12.3 percent inflation rate, which was driven by rising energy and food prices.

The index is based on data from Italy’s national statistics institute and finance ministry, with the benchmark including rising prices for basic ingredients such as flour, tomatoes, mozzarella cheese, and olive oil.

The calculations also include the electricity consumption needed to cook pizza with a home electric oven.

The cost of making margherita pizza at home has risen much faster than opting for a pre-made version.

Aside from energy, the highest cost increases in the index during this period were for mozzarella, up almost 27 percent, and flour, up just under 22 percent.

While not everyone makes pizza at home, these and similar ingredients are fairly common items in the typical household’s shopping cart.
