The Interdepartmental Commission of Kazakhstan on Foreign Trade Policy and Participation in Economic Organizations has decided to ban the export of onions for a period of 3 months.

This decision was made to prevent the mass export of onions from Kazakhstan and stabilize its prices.

“The rush demand of third countries for Kazakhstani onions is associated with natural disasters in Pakistan — one of the largest onion producers in Asia and the world. Floods in this country have provoked a global increase in prices for onions, including in the market of our republic. Additional pressure on the cost is severe frosts in the southern regions of Kazakhstan, as well as in Uzbekistan, where a large volume of production was spoiled. The main producers of onions are now actively importing Kazakhstani products,” the ministry explained.

According to the Bureau of National Statistics of Kazakhstan, in 2022 the harvest of onions in the country amounted to 1.1 million tons, while the annual volume of domestic consumption is about 315 thousand tons which is, almost 3.5 times less.

Currently, confirmed onion stocks in Kazakhstan amount to 152.4 thousand tons, or only 14% of last year’s total harvest. These volumes are sufficient until the new harvest, so the export restrictions imposed eliminate the risk of exporting all the remaining onions from Kazakhstan.

It is noted that Uzbekistan and Tajikistan have already adopted restrictions on the export of onions in their countries.
