The countries of Turkey and the United Arab Emirates have been the most important destinations for Iranian barberry exports in 2022. The amount of Iran’s barberry exports in 2022 has decreased slightly by 1.5 percent compared to 2021.

According to the statistics of Iranian customs, the export amount of barberry produced in Iran in the 12 months of 2022 was equal to 572,002 kilograms. Most of the barberry produced by Iran in 2022 has been exported to the Middle East and CIS countries. The most important export destinations of Iran’s barberry in 2022 are Turkey and the United Arab Emirates, Russia, Iraq, Kuwait, and Kazakhstan.

In the 12 months of 2022, Turkey imported 221,564 kg of barberry produced by Iran, and had a 38.7 percent share of Iran’s barberry export. The United Arab Emirates has been the second destination of Iran’s barberry exports in 2022 with an import of 97,873 kg, with a share of 17.1 percent. It should be noted that most of the barberry sent to Turkey and the United Arab Emirates are not consumed in these countries, and in these countries, after packaging and rebranding, they are re-exported to the main destination countries, which are mainly European countries.

After Turkey and the United Arab Emirates, Russia with 49,191 kg (equivalent to 8.6 percent of Iran’s barberry export in 2022), Iraq with 44,450 kg (equivalent to 7.8 percent of Iran’s barberry export in 2022) 2022), Kuwait with 29,159 kg (equivalent to 1.5 percent of Iran’s exported barberry in 2022), Kazakhstan with 28,220 kg (equivalent to 4.9 percent of Iran’s exported barberry in 2022) and Bahrain with 18,746 kg (equivalent to 3.3 percent of Iran’s export barberry in 2022). Among the European countries, Germany imported 18,214 kg, equivalent to 2.3 percent of Iran’s exported barberry in 2022, and has the highest amount of Iranian barberry export in 2022 among European countries.

The price of barberry exported by Iran in the world markets has decreased during the last two months. The increase of about 33 percent in the exchange rate of foreign currencies against the Rial in the last two months is the most important factor in the 45-50 percent decrease in the price of barberry produced in Iran in the world markets compared to the last two months.

With the start of anti-government protests in Iran from the middle of September 2022 and the subsequent shutdown of the international internet by the government, commercial and banking transactions in Iran were accompanied by problems. This issue, along with increasing human rights sanctions against Iran and decreasing hopes for the revival of the 2015 nuclear agreement, led to an increase in the price of foreign currencies in the Iranian market and, as a result, a decrease in the price of Iranian barberry exports in the world markets.
