Iran ranks third in apricot production in the world. However, it ranks 15th in the export of Gheysi (Jumbo dried apricot). Factors cause the lack of export of this product compared to its production, including problems caused by economic sanctions and Iran’s weakness in packaging, branding, and marketing of this product.

Gheysi is dried apricots. Apricots bear fruit in tropical and Mediterranean areas after two years and in cold areas after four years. Relatively temperate climates are the best climate for the growth and fruiting of this tree. The more this tree is exposed to the sun in cold areas, the more fruitful it will be. In addition, the size of the apricot depends on various factors, including the distance of planting trees, the amount of sunlight, the pH of the soil, the type of tree, and the weather humidity.

Economic sanctions, weakness in packaging, branding and marketing

Iran ranks 15th in the export of Gheysi in the world. Iran ranks third in apricot production after Turkey and Uzbekistan with 344,000 tons, which shows Iran’s great ability to produce this crop. Therefore, Iran’s 15th position in the Gheysi export is more profitable for this country than its fruit. Also, it can have a better place. However, some factors have caused exports to decrease or to be carried out through informal means, such as the conditions of economic sanctions, Iran’s weakness in packaging, branding, and marketing, the government’s requirements to meet foreign exchange obligations with Nima currency rates and rates lower than the free market, despite buying agricultural products from farmers at free market Dollar prices.

As mentioned, Iran is a suitable environment for the growth and production of apricots due to its four different climates. Good quality apricots are produced and harvested in many provinces of Iran. The largest amount of Gheysi in Iran is produced in East and West Azerbaijan and Zanjan provinces. East Azerbaijan ranks first in Iran with the production of 77,000 tons of apricots from 11,400 hectares of horticultural lands. However, according to the available data, less than 3,000 tons of it is related to the export of Gheysi. The target markets of this product with the most imports are India, Azerbaijan, Ukraine, Germany, and Belgium.

The price of Iranian dried apricots and Gheysi has increased by 25 to 31 percent compared to the last eight weeks. The two main factors in the significant increase in the price of this Iranian product in the domestic market of Iran and the global markets are the reduction in the product inventory and the decrease of about 5 percent in the exchange rate of foreign currencies against the Rial compared to the last eight weeks.
