Embargo to Russia Highlighted Turkey as an Alternative Route in China

The emergence of problems on the northern route between Asia and Europe due to the embargo imposed on Russia led China to seek alternative routes for transportation to Europe. The Middle Corridor, which includes Turkey, stands out in this process.

Turkish authorities want to take advantage of this opportunity, which is very important for Turkey, by completing the infrastructure deficiencies on the current route.

Trade and transportation between Asia and Europe is carried out through three main corridors. The “Northern Corridor” in which Russia is located, the “South Corridor” passing through Iran and the “Middle Corridor” including Turkey. However, due to the security problems in the Northern corridor due to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, alternative routes began to be sought both in China and the EU.

Underlining that Azerbaijan and Turkey, the stakeholders of the Middle Corridor, should be ready for this, the President of the Association of International Forwarding and Logistics Service Providers (UTIKAD), Ulusoy said, “Turkey should help other countries to solve the existing technical problems related to the Middle Corridor and should encourage it. We must harmonize our customs systems and taxes, and further increase the functionality of the Middle Corridor. Transit revenues will increase, domestic production will be encouraged, and if the global integration of our customs systems is completed, our export costs will decrease.”

US-based MarshMcLennan, in its analysis published recently, states that companies operating on Asian-European land trade routes are exploring alternative routes due to the sanctions imposed on Russia and Belarus.
