Hungary extended the freeze on retail prices for sunflower oil and other food products until April 30, 2023. Minister of Agricultural Development of the country Istvan Nagy said on Wednesday, stressing that these measures were taken to support the poor in the face of ongoing sanctions and rising inflation.
“The misguided sanctions of Brussels led to the fact that energy prices and, consequently, food prices reached historical highs throughout Europe, and oil sanctions further exacerbated the situation,” the head of the department said in a statement.
Fixed prices for eggs, potatoes, sugar, wheat flour, sunflower oil and chicken meat have been in effect in Hungary since February. At the same time, last week the government lifted the price ceiling for gasoline and diesel, which was set in November 2021.
Recall that until October 1, 2021, similar restrictions were in effect in Russia: for example, the government of the country at the end of 2020 announced a set of measures in connection with the increase in food prices in the Russian Federation, among them was the conclusion of agreements on stabilizing the cost of domestically produced sunflower oil.
