Overview of Coffee Export Growth
India’s coffee exports have seen a significant increase of 13.35% reaching 125,631 tonnes in the January-March period of this year, driven by robust demand for Robusta coffee. As Asia’s third-largest coffee producer and exporter, India cultivates both Arabica and Robusta varieties.
Italy, Russia, the UAE, Germany, and Turkey are the principal destinations for India’s coffee exports. During the same period in 2023, India had exported 110,830 tonnes of coffee. Arabica beans, known for their sweet and smoother taste, contain less caffeine compared to Robusta, which is favored for its bitter and stronger flavor profile.

According to the latest figures from the Coffee Board of India, Robusta coffee exports climbed by 18% to 69,637 tonnes in the first quarter of 2024, up from 59,050 tonnes in the previous year. Conversely, Arabica exports decreased to 13,419 tonnes from 15,468 tonnes.
Instant coffee exports also grew, totaling 16,218 tonnes compared to 15,238 tonnes in the previous year. Additionally, re-exports of coffee saw an increase to 26,239 tonnes from 20,952 tonnes. In terms of value, total coffee exports during January-March of 2024 were valued at approximately $43,73 million, which is higher than the $31,25 million recorded in the same period last year. The unit value realization per tonne was about $3,481.
Production Estimates and Yearly Trends
The Coffee Board’s post-blossom estimate for the 2023-24 marketing year (October-September) projects total coffee production at 374,200 tonnes, which is an increase from the actual output of 352,000 tonnes in the previous year. However, total coffee exports for the full calendar year of 2023 saw a decrease of 5.4%, amounting to 377,000 tonnes.
India’s coffee industry is experiencing significant growth in export volumes, highlighting the global demand for its Robusta variety. The industry’s ability to cope up with international markets amidst varying demand underscores its strategic importance to the country’s agricultural exports.
