Iranian Walnuts: Prediction of Harvesting 17.000 Tons of Walnuts From Tuyserkan Orchards

Spread the news!

It is expected that about 17,000 tons of walnuts will be harvested from Tuyserkan orchards this year. Tuyserkan walnut does not play a significant role in export because no action has been taken on the packing walnuts for export so far. Most walnut orchards are of paper-shell walnuts in this county.

According to the Agricultural Organizations of Tuyserkan city in Hamedan province, the area under cultivation of this crop is 6,000 hectares, of which 5,500 hectares are fertile and 500 hectares are seedlings. One of the most popular brands in the walnut market is Tuyserkan production. It is expected that about 17,000 tons of walnuts will be harvested from the gardens of this city this year.

There are 6,000 beneficiaries in the field of horticulture in this city, of which 5300 people are walnut beneficiaries. Tuyserkan walnuts do not play a vital role in exports and are consumed domestically. One of the basic problems of walnuts in this county is the lack of suitable packaging. Walnuts are packed traditionally in sacks and boxes of 5 to 10 kilos. Tuyserkan walnuts are often of local type and are different in size and shape. In addition, there is no sorting machine that can be set to a specific size. Therefore, there is no suitable packaging for walnuts in the city, and the gardeners do not obtain good added value. If the walnuts are packed and sorted, the export of this product will become more. Also, high-quality, healthy, and similar walnuts will be provided to foreign customers.

Tuyserkan walnuts will be registered worldwide. FAO representatives were supposed to visit this city in September of this year. However, this has been postponed to November due to the coronavirus. If FAO representatives visit Tuyserkan, the world registration of walnuts will probably be done one or two months after the visit.

The highest level of Tuyserkan walnut orchards is the local and traditional type, which is known for having a high-fat paper shell. In recent years, other walnut types have been created in the walnut orchards by replacing the upper branches of walnut seedlings imported to the city. About five percent of the city’s walnut orchards are of other varieties. At the beginning of this year, 10,000 grafts have been done on the upper branches of the walnut orchards. Tuyserkan walnut ranks first in terms of quality due to the high percentage of fat, unique taste, and having a paper-shell. It also ranks third in Iran in terms of the area under cultivation and quantity. The cost of this product will change in the market with the beginning of the walnut harvesting season.

Some merchants import walnuts from China and neighboring countries. Also, this walnut is smuggled into Iran from Ukraine and other countries and is re-exported and sold to world markets under the name of Tuyserkan walnut. Iranian walnuts have a unique taste compared to walnuts of rival countries. None of the walnuts can compare to Tuyserkan walnut in terms of taste, fat percentage, and herbal properties. Walnut husk is used in the dyeing and pharmaceutical industry. Walnut shell is also used as active carbon.

Compared to last month, the price of Iranian walnuts and walnut kernels for export has increased in the world markets due to the decrease in the foreign exchange rate against the Rial, despite the stability in the price of shelled walnuts and the slight decline in the price of Iranian walnut kernels for export in the domestic market of Iran. During the last week, the foreign exchange rates dropped by about 3 percent in the Iranian market due to the hopes for the agreement between Iran and the USA on the text proposed by the European Union for the return of these two countries to the nuclear agreement known as the JCPOA. In total, the price of Iranian walnut kernels for export has risen by 1.4 and 2.3 percent, and the cost of Iranian shelled walnuts for export has grown by 2.8 and 3.4 percent compared to last month.
