BEIJING, April 13: China’s soybean imports in March fell from a year earlier, as bad weather delayed Brazil’s soybean harvest and exports, according to statistics released by China Customs on Wednesday. In March, China imported 6.35 million tonnes of soybeans, down 18% from 7.77 million tonnes a year earlier. Domestic soybean prices hit record highs at the end of March amid tight domestic supplies due to delayed arrivals of soybeans in Brazil. The resurgence of the epidemic in China, affecting the transportation of feed ingredients, also supported soybean meal prices. In order to ease domestic supply constraints, China has recently held successive auctions of soybeans from its national reserves. The move, coupled with expectations that more imported soybeans will arrive in the coming months, has caused a brief pullback in soybean meal prices. But over the past few days, soybean meal prices have recovered again. Analysts said the reduction in oil plant operations helped push prices higher.
