Turkish Dried Figs: New Season Excitement

The excitement of the new season is being experienced in Aydın. Fig, one of the livelihoods of the region, is produced on an area of 40,000 hectares in the city. During the harvest period, 2 months of intensive work are done for dried figs. The workers, who make their way to the gardens before sunrise, greet the sun under the fig trees.

While the preparations are in progress, although they do not make large purchases from the farmer,  the prices to be announced by the Tariş Fig Association determine the price of figs and fig producers expect Tariş to announce the prices urgently. Since the prices have not been announced, the traders are currently trying to create the market according to their own minds, which can upset the farmer. This is why Tariş’s announcement of prices is important for the producer.

Dried figs sector meeting was held in Aydın

Aydın Provincial Director of Agriculture and Forestry Ahmet Ökdem stated that there are more than 7 million fig trees throughout the city, and organic farming is practiced in 31 percent of these areas.

Stating that Aydın has a yield of 65-70 thousand tons, Ökdem said, “Last year, there was a low yield due to extreme heat. Therefore, the yield was reduced to 57 thousand tons. We produce 65 percent of figs in world production. We have 166 warehouses, 170 figs processing facility. Our yield estimation studies for dried figs are continuing.” he said.

“Fig chips”, which is obtained by drying figs in thin slices, has started.

You can eat figs, dried, fresh and also as chips which is so delicious. In Nazilli and Kuyucak districts, dried products called “fig chips” are prepared in small businesses and homes in order to sell figs at higher prices.

The production process of “fig chips” starts with the thinly sliced figs that are freshly picked from the field with a knife. Figs are laid out in special baskets and left to dry on shaded terraces or in the gardens of the houses. Figs, which are kept for about 1 week, are dried after being packaged and made ready for sale.

Turkish Lira remained almost the same as last week and the Usd/TL rate at 17,96 TL (17,96 last week) and Euro/TL rate is at 18,24 TL levels (18,32 last week).
