In the past 2021/22 marketing year, Ukrainian traders sold 1.63 million tons of sunflower to foreign markets, which is a historical maximum for the country. According to APK-Inform analysts, Ukraine managed to achieve such results due to the suspension of sunflower oil exports and a significant reduction in oilseed processing within the country.
The US Department of Agriculture (USDA), in turn, calculated that Ukraine has become a leader among world sunflower exporters in 2021/22 MY and, most likely, will remain in this position for at least one more season.
According to APK-Inform experts, about 1.1-1.2 million tons of seeds (-29% by 2021/22 MY) can be exported from Ukraine in the new season, and this may become the second largest export volume in the entire history.
“At the same time, if exports by deep-water ports are again suspended and the volume of sunflower oil shipments from the country decreases again, oilseed exports in the 2022/23 season may reach 2.5-3 million tons. Thus, taking into account the deterioration of sunflower production forecasts in Europe due to the significant drought observed in the region over the past few months, the demand for Ukrainian sunflower is expected to be at a fairly high level,” APK-Inform analysts emphasized.
