ODESA: In season 2021/2022 Ukrainian farmers have significantly reduced the areas under legumes. As a result, the yellow peas crop was almost 3 times less than usual and amounted to 250.000 mt. But there is hope that this tendency may change next season.

Legumes are interesting for farmers, because they are now at good prices, and they can continue to grow. Unfortunately, there are not enough chickpeas and lentil seeds in Ukraine. This year there was even an FAO program to provide farmers with peas seeds. Legumes are now very interesting for farmers also because they enrich the soil with nitrogen, and this reduces the need to apply nitrogen fertilizers, which is currently a problem.

Therefore, we hope that next year farmers will increase the area sown under legumes. Now the purchase price of yellow pea is around 240-260usd/t, green peas – 270-300 usd/t, and chickpeas – 800-900usd/t.
