Sesame crop status in India

Sesame production in India is estimated to be 0,23 million tonnes this year as compared to 0,17 million tonnes last year.

According to government data, in Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh sesame cultivation has increased but according to local trade and farmers, the cultivation has not increased. In both areas the weather is critical. Last week it rained in many areas for 3 to 4 days and it is predicted to rain again in the next seven days. In these circumstances, worms may attack the sesame crop and the plants may spoil, although there is no possibility of any major loss as the harvesting of sesame has not yet started.

Black and brown sesame sowing area in Rajasthan has increased this year, a few areas have lacked rainfall and some have received more rainfall. In the present scenario, the production of black-brown sesame in Rajasthan is estimated to be 40 thousand tons and of white sesame is estimated to be 25 to 30 thousand tons. In Gujarat, there is some loss of new crop due to heavy rains in the last phase and the cultivation has decreased, hence the production of 18 to 20 thousand tonnes of white sesame and 12 to 15 thousand tonnes of black sesame is estimated.

In India, the total production of sesame is estimated to be 0,225 to 0,230 million tonnes, as against 0,180 million tonnes last year.
