200.000 Tonnes of Russian Fertilizer From Latvia

Spread the news!

Latvia will donate around 200,000 tonnes of mineral fertilizers of Russian origin to the United Nations World Food Programme, the Latvian Ministry of Foreign Affairs has announced.

It noted that Latvia, in cooperation with the European Commission, had responded to the UN’s request to mitigate the negative consequences of Russia’s war in Ukraine and to help address the food crisis in Africa and Latin America.

Sanctioned by EU

Latvia has approximately 200 000 tonnes of mineral fertilizers belonging to companies sanctioned by the European Union. This represents a modest proportion of Russia’s global mineral fertilizer exports.

The Latvian Cabinet of Ministers has agreed to support the donation of these cargoes to the UN World Food Programme.

Support to the suffering countries

The MFA points out that Latvia, together with foreign partners and international organizations, continues to provide support to countries suffering from the crisis caused by the Russian war in Ukraine, which has resulted in international food and mineral fertilizer shortages and a surge in energy prices.

Latvia condemns Russia’s efforts to use the artificial shortage of mineral fertilizers as part of a disinformation campaign in an attempt to change attitudes towards its aggression against Ukraine, the report notes.
