Chinese scientists have designed a ‘smart watch’ that can be worn on the wrists of cows and charged by kinetic energy. This smartwatch can collect data on the health, location and environmental conditions of the cow.
According to researchers from Southwest Jiaotong University, these smartwatches worn on cows could make farms healthier and cows happier, as well as reduce environmental pollution.
Efficiency is the target
According to IFLScience, the research team aims to improve food safety and supply chain efficiency with their project.
Since the smartwatch will work thanks to the kinetic energy generated by the cows’ leg movements, it will not create environmental pollution.
Will increase productivity
Zutao Zhang, an energy researcher at Southwest Jiaotong University and author of the project, said in a statement: “Monitoring cows’ environmental and health data can help detect diseases in advance and increase productivity. The data collected could include oxygen density, air temperature and humidity, frequency of movement, reproductive cycles, disease and milk production.”
The device will be able to connect to the internet with 5G technology and transmit the data it collects to the farmer. “The development and use of 5G and internet technology in agriculture will increase efficiency and create a more functioning, intelligent and transparent industry,” Zhang said.
