Massive Loss of Aquatic Bioresources Due to Russian Shelling

Massive death of aquatic bioresources

The beginning of 2023 was within ichthyological norms for wintering aquatic life, but in January, fish deaths were already recorded. The reason was the damage to the shut-off valves of the Kakhovka HPP as a result of Russian shelling in the Kakhovka reservoir. There was a massive death of aquatic bioresources. This creates direct risks of disruption of spring spawning in the reservoir. Russian shelling of the coastal part of Kherson and the Dnipro River also led to massive deaths of silver carp. Criminal proceedings have been opened over the incident.

The damage caused to the fishery, in this case, is estimated at over UAH 390 million (Eur 9.91 million), according to the State Agency of Land Reclamation and Fisheries of Ukraine.

In other water bodies of Ukraine, no fish deaths and suffocation were recorded in January. Thus, water temperature fluctuations averaged 0.4-3 ℃ in the northern and western regions, 1-4 ℃ in the eastern and central regions, and 1.5-4.5 ℃ in the south of the country. The average dissolved oxygen content in the country’s water bodies was within normal limits and higher than the minimum permissible fishery standard (4.0 mgO2/dm3).

In most regions of Ukraine, ice cover was either completely absent or partially covered water bodies and amounted to 3-6 cm (in Kharkiv region, up to 25 cm in some places). In the mountainous parts of the western regions, active ice formation was observed on rivers in the form of drifting ice, incomplete ice cover, and banks, with ice jams forming in some areas. On the ice-covered water bodies, users of aquatic bioresources carried out traditional reclamation measures, including the digging of ice holes.

Aggression of the Russian Federation

At the same time, due to the armed aggression of the Russian Federation, some information about the level regime, water temperature and oxygen content in the water bodies of the occupied and de-occupied territories of Luhansk, Donetsk and Kherson regions remains unknown.

As a reminder, during the New Year holidays, Russian occupants shelled the coastal part of Kherson and the Dnipro River, causing massive fish deaths, namely silver carp.
