UN Member States Agree to Protect Oceans

Spread the news!

UN member states have signed a historic treaty to protect the world’s oceans. According to the new agreement, at least 30% of ocean waters should be declared a protected area by 2030. To preserve biodiversity in the high seas – that is, in areas outside the territorial waters of states – it is planned to introduce binding regulations at the international level, the Greenpeace press service reports.

Negotiations on the agreement lasted about 20 years.

The text will now undergo technical editing and translation before being formally adopted at another session. This Treaty is a monumental victory for ocean protection and an important sign that multilateralism still works in an increasingly divided world.

The agreement should create the necessary legal framework for the establishment of marine reserves in neutral ocean waters. Currently, according to the UN, 10% of the world’s oceans are protected. Most of it is occupied by neutral waters that do not belong to any state.

Greenpeace hopes that the countries of the world will ratify this treaty and move on to the creation of ocean reserves.
