The European Parliament has agreed to include shipping in the carbon dioxide emissions trading system (ETS), having finally approved a package of climate measures under the “Fit for 55” program. In particular, it is planned to allocate about $ 2 billion to support the decarbonization of shipping, usm reports.
The new rules should help reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 55% by 2033.
According to the new rules, owners of large cargo ships will pay for permits covering 40% of emissions in 2024, 70% in 2025, and 100% from 2026. The rules do not apply to the auxiliary fleet and cargo ships with a gross tonnage of up to 5,000 units – the EU will review their status in 2026.
