Favorable Conditions for Winter Crops of Türkiye Average Crop Yield Expected From the Harvest in EU Countries This Season

Favorable Conditions for Winter Crops of Türkiye

Spread the news!

According to the European Commission’s Crop Service conditions have been favorable for winter crops in Türkiye. Initial delays in crop development were recovered, and the risk posed by the dry weather of late winter and early spring has substantially diminished thanks to abundant rainfall since 15 March. South-eastern production regions suffered damage from the earthquake and floods, but crops have recovered quickly.

Winter was generally drier and warmer than usual until February when a cold spell delayed crop growth. Since then, crop conditions improved thanks to well-distributed precipitation and favorable temperatures. Fair yields are currently expected, and the yield outlook may further improve if conditions are favorable for the rest of the season.

Thanks to a wet and warm winter, crops developed earlier than usual. Temperatures dropped in February, which returned crops to normal conditions for the time of year. Frequent and abundant rainfall since 15 March has led to sub-optimal growth conditions. Yield perspectives are favorable, as the current overly wet soil conditions could become an important resource that will help maintain high yield potential for winter crops if the weather turns dry in the coming weeks

Specifically, the production of wheat (soft and hard) is forecasted at 19.28Mmt (2022/23 – 19.75Mmt), and it will be obtained from 6.6Mha (6.6) areas and 280kg/dq (296) average yield. Of these, soft wheat will be 15.15 Mmt (16), and durum 4.13 Mmt (3.75)

The barley harvest is forecast to be 7.76Mmt (8.09), and it will be obtained from 3.08 Mha (3.08) of areas and 252kg/dq (263) average yield. Being grown almost 100% under irrigated conditions, the maize crop is expected to be almost unchanged at 8.54Mmt (8.50), with areas remaining at 912kha (912) and average yield at 937kg/dq (933).
