Protest From Farmers in Moldova

Spread the news!

Farmers’ protest began in Moldova on June 7. The demands include a ban on imports of agricultural products from Ukraine.

This was reported by Evropeiska Pravda with reference to the Moldovan association “Farmers’ Power”.

On the second day of the protests, June 8, Moldovan farmers, among other things, blocked the Leuseni customs post. Protests are also taking place in Telenesti and Rezin districts of Moldova.

The organization asked the government in May to take measures to help farmers. The farmers demand, among other things, a ban on imports of agricultural products from Ukraine, and an obligation for the Giurgiulesti port to export only Moldovan agricultural products.

Promises not fulfilled

On June 7, the Association held talks with Moldovan Prime Minister Dorin Recean but was not satisfied with the results. During the discussion, the farmers noted that, unfortunately, even some of the most concrete promises made by the authorities since March have not yet been fulfilled, while most farmers are allegedly facing bankruptcy in the next two to three months. The Prime Minister rejected the farmers’ request to sign a memorandum to fulfill the farmers’ demands with specific deadlines.

For this reason, after the negotiations, the farmers announced that they would hold demonstrations in 20 settlements, and if the authorities do not listen to their demands, they promise to organize a mass protest in Chisinau, eadaily.com reports.

For her part, Moldovan President Maia Sandu said that one of the farmers’ demands, a ban on grain imports from Ukraine, cannot be accepted, agrointel.ro reports.

We cannot close the country to Ukraine, because, I repeat, Ukraine protects us from the Russian threat. We have to do what we can. They will protest, they will discuss, and I hope that some acceptable solutions will be found for both sides,” she said.

We will remind you that agricultural producers of Moldova intend to stage a protest from June 7 to 30 in Chisinau. About 1,000 people and about 300 units of agricultural machinery are expected to take part in the campaign.
