Chana Procurement Has Crossed 2 Million Tonnes

NAFED procured more than 2 Million Tonnes of Chana at MSP

In the ongoing rabi marketing season Chana (Bengal gram) procurement is by NAFED (National Agricultural Cooperative Marketing Federation of India Ltd) at the MSP (Minimum Support Price). The MSP of Chana at which NAFED has procured is USD 0,65 per kg. Total procurement has crossed the 2.32 Million Tonnes mark. Last year, the Government procured 2.59 Million Tonnes of Chana.

Ahead of the start of procurement season this year NAFED had a carry-forward stock of close to 1.4 Million Tonnes.

Value of procurement and farmers benefited

As on June 15, NAFED’s procurement stood at 2.32 Million Tonnes which was valued at 151 Million USD. Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra contributes the most. The procurement is still going on mainly in the northern States and is in the final stages. More than 1.016 Million farmers have benefited from the Chana procurement exercise. 

The price of Chana is below MSP 

After doing all these efforts, the rate of Chana in the market is below MSP. The modal price (the rate at which most trades take place) of Chana has improved in recent weeks on rising procurement. Prices are currently hovering in the range of USD 0,58 – 0,59 per kg in various mandis of Madhya Pradesh.

State wise procurement

Madhya Pradesh is the largest producer of chana. The procurement has crossed 0.79 Million Tonnes till mid-June compared with 0.8 Million Tonnes in the previous season.

In Maharashtra, NAFED’s purchases exceeded 0.77 Million Tonnes against 0.76 Million Tonnes a year ago.

This year, chana purchases crossed 0.32 Million Tonnes in Gujarat as of mid-June but they are lower than 0.55 Million Tonnes a year ago. 

Also in Rajasthan, procurement stood at over 0.21 Million Tonnes as of mid-June compared with 0.29 Million Tonnes a year ago. 

Similarly in Uttar Pradesh, the Chana procurement is only 13.6k tonnes lower than 26.8k tonnes of the previous year.

Procurement ended in the Southern States

The procurement has ended in the southern States. The figures of procurement in Karnataka were up at 79.63k tonnes, while in Andhra Pradesh at 64.5k tonnes followed by Telangana at 50.23k tonnes.

India Government agencies are doing their best efforts to help farmers by procuring Chana at MSP. But due to some reasons of demand & supply gap, the prices of Chana remained below MSP. But, compared to the previous 2 weeks prices have improved slightly.
