EU Ready to Export Ukrainian Agricultural Products via Solidarity Lanes

The EU is ready to export almost all Ukrainian agricultural products via “solidarity lanes”. This was stated by EU Agriculture Commissioner Janusz Wojciechowski on 25 July, Sky News reports.

“We are ready to export almost everything. This is about 4 mln tonnes of oilseeds and grains per month, and we already reached this volume in November last year,” he said.

The European Commissioner also added that before Russia’s withdrawal from the Black Sea Grain Agreement, about 60% of Ukraine’s agricultural exports were delivered via the “Solidarity Lanes”, while 40% were exported by sea.

In addition, Ja. Wojciechowski suggested subsidizing the export of grain from Ukraine by land, as it is more expensive to transport than by sea. If this is not done, according to the European Commissioner, Ukrainian grain will lose competition with Russian grain.

“In this case, Russia will be the beneficiary of the situation because its grain will be cheaper than Ukrainian,” he said, adding that he intends to prepare a proposal for the European Commission to subsidize the cost of transporting Ukrainian grain at the expense of EU funds.
