In a flavorful move, the Indian government has announced the establishment of a National Turmeric Board. This strategic initiative aims to harness the global interest in turmeric’s health and wellness benefits, bolster awareness, and boost consumption. The ultimate goal? To propel turmeric exports to a remarkable $1 billion by 2030.
India is the world’s foremost producer, consumer, and exporter of turmeric, commanding a hefty 62% share of global trade. During 2022-23, India exported a staggering 1.534 million tonnes of turmeric and turmeric products valued at $207.45 million. The leading destinations included Bangladesh, the UAE, the US, and Malaysia. With its targeted initiatives, the newly established National Turmeric Board aims to steer exports toward the coveted $1 billion mark.
The board’s mission extends beyond exports. It will focus on enhancing the capabilities and skills of turmeric growers, fostering value addition, and ensuring adherence to stringent quality and food safety standards. This endeavor seeks to fortify India’s position in the global turmeric market by cultivating excellence.
The National Turmeric Board will collaborate closely with the Spices Board and other governmental agencies. Together, they will work towards developing and growing the turmeric sector, fostering enhanced coordination and synergy. The board’s composition is a blend of expertise and representation. An appointee of the Central government will chair it. Its members will include representatives from the Ministry of AYUSH, the Departments of Pharmaceuticals, Agriculture & Farmers Welfare, and Commerce & Industry. Additionally, senior state government representatives from three states, select national/state research institutions, turmeric farmers, exporters, and a secretary appointed by the Department of Commerce will all contribute to the board’s dynamic composition.
